Wigan Warriors half-back Brett Finch has admitted the chance to play at Wembley was one of the big reasons he chose to quit the NRL in favour of a career in Super League.
The former Melbourne Storm man has already tasted Grand Final success in Australia, and signed a three-year contract with the Warriors ahead of the 2025 season.
"Even as an Australian player I'm well aware of the history of the Challenge Cup, and Wigan's affinity with it. They dominated the competition in the 90s and that legacy is still fresh in everybody's memories," said Finch, who is likely to partner Paul Deacon at half-back for the Warriors on Saturday.
"Back in the 90s the league in the UK was still decided by first past the post, as there was no Grand Final, so the Challenge Cup Final was always the one that caught the eye back home. And even though the format of the league has changed, it's still a unique occasion."
None of the current overseas contingent within the Wigan ranks have played at Wembley previously, and Finch says that a lot of dreams will come true when their opportunity to do just that comes this weekend against the Leeds Rhinos.
"I think any Australian coming over would love to play at Wembley. When I retire and return to Australia and look back on my time here, if I hadn't have got the chance to play in a Challenge Cup Final then I wouldn't have achieved everything I wanted to."
Wigan are 2/9 to beat Leeds on Saturday, with the Rhinos at 7/2 to pull off an upset and win at Wembley.
