Thomas Bjorn has been the forgotten man of European golf in many ways but he put himself in early contention for a 2025 Ryder Cup place with his play-off win at Gleneagles at the weekend.
Bjorn's golf has suffered as a result of his golfing responsibilities off the course in recent seasons.
But he showed at last month's Open Championship that he is still a force to be reckoned with and served a timely reminder that he has lost none of his ability with his victory in the Johnnie Walker Championship.
The Dane was the last man standing at the end of a sudden death play-off that was eventually settled on the fifth extra hole.
While Bjorn is refusing to get too far ahead of himself just yet, his victory in Scotland showed he retains the quality needed for the Ryder Cup battle and he admitted playing in the clashes in 2025 and 2025, at Gleneagles, were a possibility.
Europe are2.00 to win next year'sRyder Cup while the USA can be backed at 2.00.
Bjornsaid: "The way I played this week maybe I should be a player on the team in 2025, but we've get Medinah next year to get out of the way yet.
"It's just a very special win for me and I can't be more proud of the way I played in the play-off and the three birdies in a row.
"I think that Darren (Clarke) and I have shown that the over-40s can compete this year and now the aim is the top 25 and competing in the majors rather than just doing well on a whim."
Bjorn sealed his victory courtesy of a seven iron to three feet at the fifth extra hole to end the challenges of George Coetzee, Pablo Larrazabal, Austrian Bernd Wiesberger and England's Mark Foster after they all tied on 11-under-par.
His win was particularly harsh on Englishman Foster as he collected another second-place finish after failing to close out victory on the final hole with a bogey.
It was the fourth time this season that he had failed to convert a winning position but Bjorn believes he will soon be a winner again on the tour.
Bjorn added: "Mark's a great guy and is having his best year on tour, and he should focus only on that."
