Red Bull's Mark Webber was fastest in practice for Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix but Michael Schumacher and Paul di Resta both suffered crashes.
Schumacher, who confirmed on Thursday that he would be retiring from the sport for a second time at the end of this season, crashed out after losing control of his Mercedes at the Spoon curve, hitting a tyre barrier.
Force India's di Resta also crashed out at the same curve after just five minutes of the second session.
Lewis Hamilton, who was second quickest, said after his fastest lap: "It has been quite a smooth day. I love this circuit, so it has been really great fun."
Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel was third quickest, Nico Hulkenberg of Force India fourth and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso fifth.
Lotus' Romain Grosjean was sixth, ahead of McLaren's Jenson Button, but Mercedes' Nico Rosberg was forced to stop at the end of the first session with an engine problem.
Sauber's Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi were close to crashing out as Suzuka's reputation as one of Formula 1's toughest tests was maintained.
Alonso, who is7.00to win Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix, has a 29-point lead in the championship standings over Vettel. The Spaniard is1.50to clinch his third world title this season.
