Stanislas Wawrinka admits he is in a confident frame of mind as he gets ready to play defending champion Andy Murray in the quarter-finals of the US Open.
The ninth seed from Switzerland beat Tomas Berdych in the fourth round and is9.50to cause another shock by edging past Murray in five sets on Thursday.
Wawrinka, 28, beat Murray at the US Open three years ago and has won five of his 13 encounters against the Scot.
He secured his fourth career title on clay in Portugal earlier this year and was only edged out by eventual winner Novak Djokovic after a thrilling five-set encounter at the Australian Open in January.
Wawrinka said: "It is confidence, for sure. I had a tough beginning of the year, but at the same time it was really positive for me because I was playing great tennis.
"I had some tough losses but I was still working out. I think the title in Portugal, beating David Ferrer in the final, helped me a lot with my confidence to pass the next level."
Murray has dropped two sets in his four matches at Flushing Meadows so far this year and has yet to hit the heights that saw him win the US Open title 12 months ago and succeed at Wimbledon in January.
