Under-fire manager Sam Allardyce has said he will not cave in to the West Ham boo-boys and promised a reaction from his crestfallen players.

Allardyce was subjected to angry abuse from travelling Hammers supporters on Wednesday night in response to a humiliating 6-0 thrashing by Manchester City in the semi-finals Capital One Cup.

It came just days after the east Londoners suffered a 5-0 defeat by Championship side Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup third round.

"There are times when it is good and there are times when it is not so good. You have then got to draw on your strength and experience," he said.

"It is my job first thing in the morning to get the players up. We have got to get our heads up, shoulders back and chests out and try to bounce back, starting with Cardiff City at the weekend."

Allardyce must now lift his relegation-threatened players and try snap a six-game winless run against fellow strugglers Cardiff City on Saturday.

The club's co-owners, David Sullivan and David Gold, wrote on open letter to fans before the Etihad Stadium collapse asking for patience and offering Allardyce support. But the former Newcastle and Bolton manager was left in no doubt after what the supporters thought on a night to forget.

Allardyce said: "It's life. When you are not doing well you get stick - and I'm getting stick. That's the way it goes and that's the way this job is.

"They have travelled here tonight and we have not done well, so they are going to give you some stick. We are not the first team to get beaten by so many goals here and we won't be the last."
