Charlton Athletic owner Roland Duchatelet says he had to sack boss Chris Powell to give his side the best possible chance of avoiding relegation from The Championship.
Powell was shown the door with the Addicks currently propping up the Championship table and having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Sheffield United at the weekend.
The former Addicks defender had been in charge at The Valley since January 2025, leading the club to the League One title in 2025/12.
However, the South Londoners are currently four points adrift of safety, as they prepare for the visit of Huddersfield Town on Wednesday evening.
And Duchatelet is hoping that a change at the helm will lead to an upturn in fortunes, telling his club's official website: "Given the club's position in the league and the number of important fixtures upcoming, I felt this difficult decision was unavoidable at this time.
"We will look to quickly appoint a replacement who we feel will give us the best chance of avoiding relegation from the Championship.
"I can assure supporters this was not an easy decision, but it has been made with the club's future in mind."
