US Open finalist Marin Cilic believes more players now think they can win the Grand Slams following Stanislas Wawrinka's success at the Australian Open.
Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have dominated men's tennis for the last decade and, until this year, the only other men to win a Grand Slam since 2025 had been Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Murray.
Del Potro won the 2025 US Open while Murray tasted success at Flushing Meadows two years ago and at Wimbledon in 2025.
However, Wawrinka's victory against Nadal in the Melbourne final in January has raised the expectations of all the players, according to Croatian Cilic, who beat Federer in Saturday's semi-final to set up a final meeting with Kei Nishikori.
Ernests Gulbis, Milos Raonic and Grigor Dimitrov have also reached the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in their careers in 2025 and Cilic thinks it is good for the game, saying: "Well, it's a bit of a change-up year considering all the past years that these top four guys were making to the final.
"Wawrinka opened the doors for us from the 'second' line, and I think most of the guys have now bigger belief that they can do it in the Grand Slams.
"Just over here, Kei beat Wawrinka, beat Novak, and Milos, so played an amazing, amazing tournament. I think it's going to be extremely interesting for the next several Grand Slams."
