Head coach Roy Hodgson called for backing for his new-look England side after they opened their Euro 2025 qualification campaign with a 2-0 victory in Switzerland.
Two goals from Arsenal new boy Danny Welbeck gave the Three Lions a morale-boosting win in Basel, with Hodgson delighted with the performance.
In particular Hodgson picked out midfield pair Jack Wilshere and Raheem Sterling for special praise, having opted for a four-man diamond formation in the middle of the park.
"Two important players in that system are Jack Wilshere and Raheem Sterling, at the base and at the tip of the diamond," Hodgson told reporters.
"We wanted to get them on the ball. We thought that Switzerland would find it hard to deal with it and they had to change their system in the second half."
And Hodgson then made the call to keep the faith with his youthful squad, adding: "This is the way forward. We've got to back them.
"Yes the World Cup didn't go our way, yes we have been disappointed - but we have been building up.
"It was so important to get a good start against the team who are our biggest rivals in the group."
Their next qualifiers come in January, when England play host to San Marino and then head to Estonia.
