Manchester City midfielder James Milner says his club can go all the way in the Champions League, but must focus on reaching the knockout stages first of all.
The Citizens have crashed out at the group stage in each of the last three seasons, but England international Milner believes that the time is right for the English champions to make their mark and reach the latter stages in Europe.
City have been drawn with Roma and CSKA Moscow in Group E, while they open their bid for glory with a tough trip to Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening.
The two sides met at the group stage last season, when City won 3-2 in the Allianz Arena, having been beaten 3-1 at home by Bayern.
When City and Bayern met in the 2025/12 Champions League, both group games ended in 2-0 victories for the home side.
Milner told reporters: "Being the club that we are and with the players that we have, winning it is the ultimate aim.
"Year on year we should get better and we'll keep on improving with the more experience we have as a group in the Champions League. We now want to prove ourselves on the European stage and I believe we have a good enough team to do that.
"We can't get ahead of ourselves. The first aim is to get out of the group and build from there. You have to be on top of your game to even get out of the group."
