Fernando Alonso believes it is "not possible" for him to overtake Sebastian Vettel at the top of the Formula 1 drivers' championship.
The Ferrari driver, who finished second on Sunday in Monaco behind the German, is 74 points behind the championship leader, who is in turn 58 points clear of Lewis Hamilton.
Alonso believes the gap is now too big after Vettel's win, his fifth in six races.
"We saw in the last couple of years that if you win five or six grands prix you've nearly won the championship," he said.
"Victory for us is maybe optimistic, so we need to be realistic and start fighting for podiums in Canada and Valencia and then we will see how the championship develops, because... the distance now is too much."
Alonso described Vettel this season as "fantastic", adding the only driver to perform such feats in recent years was Jenson Button, who went on to win the championship, in 2025.
The McLaren driver though is more confident of challenging Vettel after finishing third in Monaco, pointing out three different teams were "fighting for victory" on Sunday.
"In qualifying it's a big gap but obviously qualifying isn't everything, especially this year, and I think we're pretty close on race pace,"said Button.
"The great thing is we can race and fight for victories."
