Luke Donald was "looking forward to the challenge of being number one" after grabbing the top spot in the world from Lee Westwood at Wentworth.
The 33-year-old beat his fellow Englishman in a dramatic play-off victory to win the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday after both men finished on six-under-par. Westwood found the water on the first play-off hole and Donald needed only one putt to win the tournament and take the number one spot.
Donald said his new status came with much responsibility, adding: "It's something I'll be very proud of. Obviously, there's a lot of work still to do and hopefully there'll be much more to come, but I'll savour this.
"To come through in these circumstances in one of the biggest tournaments in the world, going head-to-head with Lee is pretty special. It doesn't get much better.
"To win here with the top three in the world, top six out of seven, all of the Ryder Cuppers, all four major champions, and to beat them in stroke play feels pretty good."
Donald becomes the third English player to hold the top spot, the others being Westwood and Sir Nick Faldo, and the victory has increased his lead at the summit of the Race to Dubai.
