Hatem Ben Arfa has been forced to leave Newcastle United's pre-season tour of the United States after picking up an ankle injury.
The France international was stretchered off during Wednesday's goalless draw with Sporting Kansas City and will return to England for the injury to be assessed.
A club statement said: "Hatem Ben Arfa sustained an injury to his left ankle in a tackle during the club's friendly against Sporting Kansas on Wednesday evening and went to a local hospital for a precautionary X-ray.
"Consequently he will be leaving the club's US tour tomorrow and the injury will be reassessed over the next 48 hours."
Ben Arfa missed most of last season after a double leg break following a challenge by Nigel de Jong in the game against Manchester City on 3rd January but it is hoped this latest setback is not serious.
The club are already missing Joey Barton, Yohan Cabaye and Nile Ranger for the tour after the trio were refused entry visas, and despite the debuts of Sylvain Marveaux and Demba Ba were unable to find a way past the Kansas defence.
