Rio Ferdinand has not travelled with the Manchester United squad to Romania for their Champions League game at Otelul Galati on Tuesday evening.
Fellow defender Nemanja Vidic has made the journey after recovering from a calf problem while Dimitar Berbatov has also been included.
Ferdinand was also left out of the squad for the trip to Benfica last month, and after playing against Liverpool in the 1-1 draw at the weekend is not being risked on another European journey, perhaps with one eye on the Manchester derby next Sunday.
United have two points from their first two games and are4/9to win Group C. Basel can be backed at15/2while Benfica are at9/4.
Phil Jones is in contention but Tom Cleverley and Rafael are still not back to full fitness.
Ferdinand has struggled with injuries in recent years but insisted after the Liverpool game he still has the ability to play at the top of his profession.
"I have had people writing me off many times in my career," he said. "I just go out and play. I am confident in my own ability.
"Whatever anyone writes doesn't bother me whether it is good or bad.
"I wasn't in the England squad so I just have to shrug my shoulders and get on with it.
"I am not one to sit around and moan and mope."
