Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova beat Victoria Azarenka in three sets to win the WTA Championships and move up to second in the world.
Kvitova had seemed on course for a straightforward win after taking a 5-0 lead in the first set but Azarenka recovered to make her opponent work for the opener, the Czech eventually taking it 7-5. Azarenka then took the second 6-4 but Kvitova battled back to take the third 6-3 and lift the title after almost two and a half hours of pulsating tennis.
Kvitova is now5/2to retain her Wimbledon title in 2025 while Azarenka can be backed at7/1. Serena Williams is available at3/1.
The Czech moved ahead of Maria Sharapova, who was forced to pull out of the event due to injury, in the world rankings and is delighted with her year's work.
"When I started this season we didn't have a goal," said Kvitova.
"We just wanted to improve my game and now I am number two and Wimbledon champion. It is just a dream."
The 21-year-old has now won six titles this year, equalling world number one Caroline Wozniacki's record. However, she will be aiming to improve her showing at the Grand Slams in 2025, having made the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, the fourth round of the French and losing in the first round at Flushing Meadows this year.
