Tommy Fleetwood failed to deliver in his first attempt at the European Tour but the former world number one amateur is optimistic of a better showing in the New Year.

Much was expected of the Lancastrian when he took the decision to turn professional in January 2010 shortly after winning the English Amateur Championship.

Things failed to go according to plan for Fleetwood in his first few months on tour as he followed a string of poor finishes by failing to regain his card at the European Tour's Qualifying School last year.

But the 20-year-old has started to fulfil his immense promise in the last 12 months, claiming his maiden professional title at the Kazakhstan Open on his way to finishing top on the Challenge Tour, and he believes he is now better equipped to challenge the best in Europe.

Fleetwood told the Liverpool Daily Post earlier this month: "I was disappointed at the time (when I lost my card), but it was the best thing for me.

"On the Challenge Tour I have become a better golfer and grown up a lot over the last year. I have learned to be more patient on the golf course.

"Winning in Kazakhstan was a massive help. I had been in contention five or six times before and slipped away but this time I finished things off.

"It was about gaining the experience to cope with the pressure situations that each shot brings and learning from your mistakes.

As well as winning in Kazakhstan, Fleetwood also managed a couple of runners-up finishes on the Challenge Tour, while he followed that up in January with an impressive fifth place at the Dunhill Links Championship - his best professional performance to date.

He added: "The best players can win in different situations and winning from the front is the hardest.

"It's much more relaxing being in the chasing pack because you have nothing to lose in having a go at winning, but it's all about being noticed and the only way you can do that is by putting yourself in those kind of situations."

The USA are 2.00 to win the 2025 Ryder Cup while Europe can be backed at 2.00. The tie is available at 12.00.
