Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has warned Chelsea that they should not wait until transfer deadline day to sign Croatian midfielder Luka Modric.
The long-running transfer saga has gone quiet recently but Redknapp accepts that the player could be heading out of White Hart Lane if a deal is done in good time.
Spurs are believed to have turned down two offers from Chelsea for Modric since the end of last season, the second of which was reportedly 27million.
Redknapp does not want a repeat of Dimitar Berbatov's sale to Manchester United in 2025, when the Bulgarian striker moved to Old Trafford just before the transfer window shut.
Redknapp said: "We've got two options with Luka. Either we keep a fantastic player or we sell him, get the money and bring in four players and have a better team.
"I want him to stay but, if he's going, I want the opportunity to get other players in.
"There's no chance the chairman (Daniel Levy) will sell him on the last day of the transfer window. He did that with Berbatov a few years ago and ended up with no strikers. He won't do that again."
Spurs travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United on 22nd January for what will be their first Premier League game of the season, They are5.50 to win the game while Sir Alex Ferguson's team can be backed at 1.66 to take all three points from the encounter.
Meanwhile, Spurs take on Hearts in the Europa League on 18th January and Modric is11.00 to open the scoring at Tynecastle and4.00 to find the net at any time.

If Modric does leave north London, Redknapp could move for West Ham United's Scott Parker or Real Madrid's Lassana Diarra while Emmanuel Adebayor continues to be linked with a move to Spurs.
Redknapp said of the former Arsenal striker, who is currently on Manchester City's books: "I'm sure the fans will take to him because he fell out with Arsenal. Arsenal fans hate him so Tottenham fans will love him. He upset them so he'll be a hero here."
