England forward Daniel Sturridge has called on his Chelsea team-mates to remain united as they bid to secure silverware this season.
The Middlesex left-hander registered a top score of a mere 31 in the UAE, struggling in all three forms of the game and he is replaced for the Tests in Sri Lanka by Nottinghamshire all-rounder Samit Patel.
Kent off-spinner James Tredwell has also won a call-up, with England expecting conditions to favour slow bowlers in the two Tests in Galle and Colombo, the first of which starts on 26th March.
Ian Bell retains his place despite a below-par display against Pakistan, while Ravi Bopara will battle with Patel to secure the spot open due to Morgan's absence.
National selector Geoff Miller told the ECB's official website: "We have selected a squad that we feel will be able to make best use of the conditions we are likely to encounter in Sri Lanka.
"There is no doubt that this Test series will be a challenging one, but it is exciting that players have an opportunity to demonstrate that they have learnt from the disappointment of the Pakistan Test series."
England will be keen to impress in Sri Lanka, with the ICC World Twenty20 taking place on the island in January - with England5.50 to retain their title, while the hosts are5.50 and Pakistan are 8.50.
Squad: Andrew Strauss (captain), Alastair Cook, Jonathan Trott, Ian Bell, Kevin Pietersen, Ravi Bopara, Samit Patel, Matt Prior, Steven Davies, Graeme Swann, Monty Panesar, James Tredwell, James Anderson, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Steven Finn.
