India batting legend Rahul Dravid has announced his retirement from Test cricket, exiting as the second-highest run-scorer in the history of the longest form of the game.
The 39-year-old right-hander played in 164 Test matches, making 13,288 runs at an average of 52.31, including 36 hundreds, while he also took a record 210 catches for a non-wicketkeeper.
Dravid's tally sees him sit behind long-time India colleague Sachin Tendulkar, with the Little Master having 15,470 runsto his name to date.
"It has been 16 years since I first played a Test match for India and I feel it's time for me to move on and let a new generation of players make their own history," Dravid told reporters as he announced his retirement.
"When I started I could never imagine that this long journey will take me so far.
"I knew in my heart. I knew deep down that the time was right. I was happy and comfortable with what I have achieved with what I have done."
Dravid had already retired from both Twenty20 and one-day international cricket, before a poor series in Australia convinced him to call time in the Test arena.
He will continue to play in the IPL, captaining the Rajasthan Royals in the upcoming fifth season of the competition.
The Royals are12/1to win the IPL title this season, with the Delhi Daredevils10/3and the Chennai Super Kings7/2.
