Michael Schumacher edged Lewis Hamilton in second practice ahead of Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix, denying the McLaren driver a double.
Hamilton had earlier finished quickest in the first session in cold, damp conditions, recording a time of one minute 37.106 seconds, as he looks to limit the damage of a possible five-place penalty due to a gearbox change.
However, seven-time champion Schumacher, who is14/1to win the race, took advantage of an error by the 27-year-old in the third sector of the second session to record the quickest time of one minute 35.973.
World champion Sebastian Vettel, who can be backed at4/1to triumph in Shanghai, was just behind the pair, ending the sessions 0.187 seconds behind Schumacher and 0.015 slower than Hamilton.
Vettel's Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber, who is5/2to record a podium finish, came in fourth, with Nico Rosberg fifth in his Mercedes.
Jenson Button was unhappy about a lack of front-end grip in his McLaren throughout and finished sixth, almost three quarters of a second slower than Schumacher.
Ferrari struggled again, with Fernando Alonso coming in sixth, a second quicker than his team-mate Felipe Massa who was way back in 17th.
