New England manager Roy Hodgson will not be able to call on Chris Smalling's services during next month's Euro 2025 tournament in Poland and Ukraine.
The 22-year-old Manchester United defender picked up a groin injury in last weekend's victory against Swansea City and will play no part in Sunday's final Premier League game of the campaign at Sunderland.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed: "Chris has suffered a bad injury. It is a groin muscle injury and he will miss the European Championships.
"We are assessing what to do at the moment but it is a bad injury."
Smalling has featured in 35 Premier League matches for United since moving to Old Trafford from Fulham in a 10million deal almost two years ago.
Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck will be available for England this summer even though he will miss Sunday's trip to Wearside with an ankle injury.
"He is still out just now but he should be fit for the Euros," Ferguson added.
