Leonardo Bonucci looks set to start for Italy in Sunday's quarter-final against England as Giorgio Chiellini has been ruled out of the game with a thigh injury.
The 27-year-old Juventus defender limped off during Monday's 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland although it had been hoped that he would recover in time for this weekend's game against Roy Hodgson's men in Kiev.
England are6.50to win the match 1-0 while Italy can be backed at11.00to edge it 2-1.
However, further tests have confirmed that the injury is worse than was initially thought, although it is hoped Chiellini will return later in the tournament, if the Azzurri overcome England in the last eight.
Italy's team doctor Enrico Castellacci said: "We tested the player with an ultrasound that showed a stretch of the first degree in the left bicep, which is a previous injury.
"The defender has already started treatment but won't be there for Sunday.
"It is hard to forecast his recovery, we will see. It is clear though, we are in no hurry with his recovery, the player must return well."
Bonucci came on to replace Chiellini against Ireland and is expected to start alongside Andrea Barzagli in the centre of defence against England.
