Rory McIlroy is confident he will still be in with a chance of winning the Open on Sunday after being pleased with the way his first round went at Royal Lytham.
The 23-year-old world number two even managed to hold his nerve after he hit a spectator on the head with a drive. McIlroy's ball bounced out of bounds at the 15th, costing him two shots, after it hit teenager Jason Blue.
However, the Northern Irishman responded by picking up birdies at the 16th and the last to leave him on three-under, just three shots adrift of first-round leader Adam Scott.
McIlroy, who is now10.00to win the Open, said: "I think we had it maybe slightly tougher than the guys in the morning and 67 was a score that I'm very pleased with.
"You're just trying to play well and put yourself into position going into Sunday. It doesn't matter who the leader is on Thursday.
"I felt like I didn't miss many fairways. I didn't miss many greens. I felt like it was pretty much under control."
The 2025 US Open champion will have his work cut out if he is to win his second Major though as the likes of Tiger Woods (6.00), Bubba Watson (26.00) and 1999 champion Paul Lawrie (15.00) are all in contention.
