Rebecca Adlington has admitted she faces a tough battle to hold on to her Olympic 800m freestyle crown after taking bronze in the 400m on Sunday.
The Great Britain swimmer lost her 400m title to France's Camille Muffat, Allison Schmitt of the USA taking the silver, but saw off the rest of a strongline-up to claim bronze.
The heats for the 800m take place on Thursday with the final on Friday. Adlington is1.36to successfully defend her title, while Lotte Friis is at3.50for gold and Kathleen Ledecky can be backed at9.00.
"I'm going to have to fight like hell to get a medal. I know the 800m is going to be a fight, exactly the same as the 400m," said Adlington.
"I know it's going to be extremely tough but I am going to try my absolute hardest, just as I did on Sunday, and hopefully the crowd can pick me up as they did then and I can pick up that performance."
The 23-year-old scraped through in qualifying for the 400m, and was happy to have finished on the podium.
"I know everyone else wanted to say, 'Oh, you got the gold in Beijing' but to me I was not expecting that at all, so I am so pleased," she admitted.
"I would have liked to go a tiny bit faster and equal what I did in March, but to be honest the whole environment adds stuff. You forget that all takes a toll on you; the emotion can take it out of you a little bit."
