Rory McIlroy believes that a change in the way he prepares for tournaments can reap dividends for him in golf's majors in the years to come.

McIlroy lines up in the US PGA Championship this week and is17.00toadd to the US Open title that he won last year.

By his own high standards, the world number three has struggled to match the level he reached at Congressional 14 months ago when he romped to his first Grand Slam victory by eight shots.

But McIlroy revealed that he has changed his practice routine in the build-up to tournaments recently and says this will help him in his quest for more success.

He said: "Certain players feel like they need to be on the range for two or three hours a day and really work on drills. And for me, I feel I practise much better on the course when I can see different shots and work it off different targets and just play.

"I'll still go and practise on the range and work on things that I have to, but once I feel comfortable that I've done that, I'll want to go on to the course and make sure it's good out there."

McIlroy looked ideally placed to challenge at the halfway stage of the Masters in Januaryil, only to fall away badly after a poor third round, and he has failed to figure in the majors since then.

The Northern Irish star finished 15 strokes behind Ernie Els at last month's Open Championship, but an improved display in the last two rounds of last week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational has given him cause for optimism ahead of the US PGA Championship. Tiger Woods is9.00to take the title, while Luke Donald can be backed at21.00.

McIlroy added: "I'm disappointed that I have not contended since (the Masters). That's been the disappointing thing. I haven't given myself even a chance.

"I was in good position at the Masters going into Saturday and shot a bad third round and sort of blew myself out of contention. It would be great just to give myself a chance this week, get into contention and just feel that buzz again of getting into contention and remembering how it feels."
