Vincent Kompany is facing a race against time to be fit for Sunday's Community Shield clash with Chelsea at Villa Park.
The Manchester City skipper has been nursing a calf problem since the end of last season and suffered a recurrence of the issue on the club's recent tour of the Far East.
Kompany has been training in isolation this week but was part of the squad who returned late Thursday afternoon to complete the second stint of the day.
The Belgian has responded well to treatment but sources have indicated boss Roberto Mancini will not take any risks with his influential talisman.
It is the same injury which kept the 26-year-old on the sidelines throughout March, as City's title challenge appeared to falter, before he returned to lead them to Premier League glory.
Kompany will have a final assessment on Saturday morning with Kolo Toure now on stand-by.
Micah Richards is also struggling with the shoulder injury he picked up whilst on Team GB duty at the Olympics, and Gareth Barry is still a few weeks away from full fitness (abdominal).
