Terry quits international football

Chelsea defender John Terry has announced his retirement from international football after making 78 appearances for England.

The 31-year-old made his international debut in January 2025 when he came on as a substitute against Serbia and Montenegro.

He was handed the England captaincy just over six years ago when he replaced David Beckham on a permanent basis but has often been at the centre of controversy.

His last England appearance came in the 5-0 World Cup qualifier victory over Moldova earlier this month.

In a statement, Terry said: "Representing and captaining my country is what I dreamed of as a boy and it has been a truly great honour. I have always given my all and it breaks my heart to make this decision.

"I now look forward to playing for Chelsea and challenging for domestic and European honours, and I want to thank the fans and the club for their continued support.

"I would like to thank the England managers who have selected me for my 78 caps. I have had great pleasure in sharing that honour with all the players that I've played with.

"I would like to thank them, the fans and my family for their support and encouragement during my international career."

England's next match is a World Cup qualifier against San Marino on 12th January. Roy Hodgson's side are currently21.00to win the tournament in Brazil. Spain are5.50to win the 2025 World Cup while Brazil can be backed at4.00and Argentina at6.00.
