Heather Watson is Britain's new number one after beating Taipei's Chang Kai-chen in the final of the Japan Open on Sunday.
The 20-year-old moves up 21 places to 50 in the world rankings as a result of her success in Osaka while previous number one Laura Robson rises four spots to 52.
Watson's victory meant she became the first British woman since Sara Gomer 24 years ago to win a WTA title.
"I've worked so hard for this moment my whole career," said Watson. "That's why I practised so hard, ran all those miles and lifted all those weights, for moments like this."
Watson, who saved four match points on her way to a dramatic 7-5 5-7 7-6 victory, added: "The match was so close from start to finish.
"She was playing unbelievably and I just had to hang in there. I've worked a lot on being more aggressive but I also had to use my defensive skills.
"When I was three match points down and she was serving for the match, I just thought 'Oh no'. But I just took it point by point. I don't know how I did it but I did. This ranks as one of the best days of my life."
