Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney faces at leasta fortnight out of action after suffering a knee injury in training ahead of the 4-3 win over Newcastle United.

The Red Devils moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table after winning a thriller against the Magpies at Old Trafford, with Rooney forced to sit out due to his minor setback.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson told MUTV: "Wayne did it towards the end of training.

"He was trying a volley when he strained a ligament behind the knee. It's unfortunate and he could be out for two to three weeks."

Meanwhile, Ferguson was delighted with the three points from a seesaw Boxing Day encounter, especially after learning that Manchester City had been beaten 1-0 at Sunderland.

"It's a really significant result for us, it puts in a good position," Ferguson added.

"As I always say of January, it's a month that tells you everything. When we come to the end of the Wigan game on 1st January, we'll still be top of the league."

Next up for United is a visit from West Brom on Saturday, with the Baggies sixth in the table after a 2-1 Boxing Day win at lowly QPR.
