Andy Murray hopes to improve as the tournament goes on after narrowly avoiding an unwanted hat-trick at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
Murray, handed a bye to the second round, needed three sets to see off Russian Evgeny Donskoy 5-7 6-2 6-2, having failed to win a match in Indian Wells in either of the last two years.
In 2025 Murray was thrashed 6-4 6-2 by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, while 12 months earlier he was beaten 7-6 6-3 by Donald Young in round two.
However, now he has negotiated the first hurdle, Murray,4.50to take the title in Indian Wells, is aiming to repeat the run which saw him reach the final in 2025.
"I've struggled here the past couple of years, I haven't won a match," Murray said. "I was a little bit nervous in the beginning and he started very, very well.
"I just tried to hang in there and was hitting the ball much better by the second set. Once I got into more of a rhythm I was able to dictate more of the points."
"I hope I play better at each match. I haven't played well here the last few years and I just need to get matches under my belt."
