Rory McIlroy is aiming to cut out the mistakes which hampered his first round at the Houston Open, as he targets moving back to the top of the world rankings.l.
McIlroy is 1-over par after a disappointing 73 at Redstone, with the Northern Irishman needing to win the tournament to move back above Tiger Woods.
American D.A. Points set the early pace, shooting a 64 to lead after round one on 8-under par, with Cameron Tringdale and John Rollins one shot back.
McIlroy,21.00to hit back and win in Texas, told Sky Sports after a poor start: "I kept in good spirits, I didn't get too down on myself.
"I think if I just eliminate the stupid mistakes, you know, I made double on a par five on the front nine and made a couple of silly bogeys.
"I'm still a bit tentative out there on the golf course and perhaps not committing to my shots fully. It takes time, it takes rounds, and hopefully another three rounds this week and some good scores will set me up well."
