Roger Federer pledged that he had 'plans to play for many more years' after suffering a shock second-round Wimbledon exit at the hands of Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Federer, the reigning champion and seven-time title-winner at SW19, was beaten 7-6 6-7 5-7 6-7 by the world number 116, a loss which ended an incredible run of 36 Grand Slam tournaments at which he had at least reached the quarter-finals.

However, Federer was adamant that the shock reverse would not bring his future into question, telling reporters: "What you do after something like this, you don't panic at this point. Go back to work and come back stronger. It's hard to do sometimes.

"It's normal that after all of a sudden losing early, having being in Grand Slam quarter-finals 36 times, people feel it's different.

"But I still have plans to play for many more years to come."

The early exit of Federer followed soon after injuries put paid to both Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Cilic and came just two days after Rafael Nadal had been upset by Steve Darcis.

All of which left home hope Andy Murray1.30to reach the final from the bottom half of the draw, but the number two seed is taking nothing for granted.

He added after defeating Yen-Hsun Lu in straight sets: "Everybody was so obsessed with how the draw was before the tournament started. Now everybody wants to change their views on it because a few guys have lost.

"There's top players still left in the tournament and there's a lot of young guys as well coming through."
