Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney faces a race to be fit for the start of the new Premier League season after suffering a hamstring injury.
The 27-year-old England star has returned home from a pre-season tour of the Far East to have the injury assessed, with United expecting Rooney to be sidelined for around a month.
A short statement from United confirmed: "Following a scan on a hamstring injury sustained in training, it has been decided that Wayne Rooney should return home immediately for further assessment and rehabilitation.
"It is anticipated he will be unavailable for selection for a month."
That makes Rooney unlikely to feature in the Community Shield against Wigan Athletic on Sunday 11th January and England's Wembley friendly against Scotland three days later.
