Phil Mickelson has set his sights on a career Grand Slam, with the US Open the only Major title to have escaped his grasp to date.
The 43-year-old left-hander added the Open Championship to his list of honours at the weekend and, having already won the Masters and the USPGA Championship, Mickelson now hopes to end his US Open wait to complete the set.
Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods are the only five players to have completed a career Grand Slam and Mickelson is aware that he would join an elite club.
"I think that if I'm able to win the US Open and complete the career Grand Slam, I think that that's the sign of the complete great player," Mickelson said.
"Those five players are the greats of the game, you look at them in a different light."
Mickelson has suffered a number of near misses at the US Open in the past, finishing second on six separate occasions, the most recent of which came earlier this year.
Leading going into the final round, Mickelson double-bogeyed two of the first five holes, before bogeys at 15 and 18 saw him finish two shots back from eventual winner Justin Rose.
