Matija Nastasic is set to hand Manchester City a welcome boost after captain Vincent Kompany picked up an injury during the 4-0 victory against ten-man Newcastle United.
The Belgian defender was forced to limp-out of the Blues' impressive display on Monday night with a groin injury.
The 27-year-old will have a scan on Tuesday but the early signs are Kompany could be absent for up to a month.
The loss of Kompany will be lessened if Nastasic comes safely through training over the rest of the week.
The 20-year-old Serbian international has recovered sooner than expected from the ankle ligament damage he sustained during a pre-season game against Sunderland and he is likely to be needed as Micah Richards is also set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring strain in training.
Boss Manuel Pellegrini will now also step up his pursuit for an additional centre-back, with Real Madrid's Pepe still on the radar.
