Serena Williams is just one Grand Slam title short of the mark of 18 of both Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert after winning the US Open for a fifth time.
Williams needed three sets to subdue the fight of Victoria Azarenka at Flushing Meadows, eventually running out a 7-5 6-7 6-1 winner to move within five Grand Slams of the Open era record of Steffi Graf.
Graf won 22 major titles, just two less than the all-time record held by Australian Margaret Court.
And American Williams, 32, fired an ominous warning that there is far to come from her before she calls time on her illustrious career.
She said: "I feel great, I have never felt better. I feel really fit.
"I haven't felt like this in a number of years - I'm excited about the possibilities. I don't know what can happen. I just keep playing and do the best that I can.
"I won the French Open but I wasn't happy with my performances in the other two Slams - not even making it to the quarter-finals.
"So I definitely feel a lot better with at least a second Grand Slam under my belt this year."
