Premier League strugglers Sunderland have confirmed the appointment of Gus Poyet as their new head coach, handing the Uruguayan a two-year deal.
The 45-year-old former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder is the permanent replacement for the recently sacked Paolo Di Canio, who was axed with the Black Cats propping up the table.
Sunderland have yet to win a game in the league this season, picking up just one point from their opening seven games - that coming from a 1-1 draw with Southampton.
The Black Cats are1.80to be relegated this season, with Crystal Palace1.14and Fulham4.33, with the South American's first game in charge a trip to Swansea City on Saturday 19th January.
Poyet's previous managerial experience came with Brighton, where he spent nearly four years in charge before being axed last summer, while before that he was assistant manager at Spurs, Leeds United and Swindon Town.
Black Cats chairman Ellis Short is confident that his club have got the right man to try and turn things around.
He told his club's official website: "We analysed a wide range of candidates and believe that Gus' track record, experience, commitment and passion make him the right man to take us forward."
