Manchester United are sweating on the news that Tom Cleverley could be out for longer than was first feared.
The Red Devils midfielder was forced to withdraw from the England squad last week after complaining of a sore calf he picked up training.
Medical staff originally felt the complaint would only keep the 24-year-old out for a maximum of two weeks.
The playmaker, however, has still been in discomfort over the last few days, having now reported back to United's own doctors at their Carrington training base.
Cleverley suffered with a calf problem 18 months ago which kept him out of the side for an extended period.
United don't want to take any risks and have since sent the player for further scans to see if there is a deep-rooted problem.
United host high-flying Southampton at Old Trafford this weekend and Cleverley was already out of the equation for boss David Moyes.
But the champions are concerned their stuttering start to the campaign could suffer yet another midfield blow.
New signing Marouane Fellaini is already scheduled to have hand surgery which will keep him on the sidelines for at least six weeks.
