Stuart Broad took five wickets on the first day of the opening Ashes Test as Australia reached a below-par total of 273-8 by the close in Brisbane.
And the Baggy Greens were a little fortunate to reach even that total after they had been reduced to 132-6 midway through the second session, before Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson added 114 much-needed runs for the seventh wicket.
Australia have an excellent recent record at the Gabba but they could not cope with Broad, who took the first four wickets to fall and eventually ended the day with figures of 5-65 from his 20 overs.
James Anderson picked up two wickets and Chris Tremlett one while Graeme Swann toiled without much success.
After wicketkeeper Matt Prior had been passed fit to play and Tremlett preferred as their third seamer, England captain Alastair Cook lost the toss, with Australia opting to bat first.
Broad had Chris Rogers caught at gully before David Warner and Shane Watson added 59 runs for the second wicket.
Broad then had Watson caught at second slip by Swann and, just after lunch, Michael Clarke was caught by Ian Bell at short leg for just one to reduce his side to 73-3.
Warner handed Broad his fourth wicket when he hit a short delivery straight to Kevin Pietersen at extra cover and was dismissed for 49.
Anderson soon dismissed debutant George Bailey before Tremlett chipped in with the wicket of Steve Smith who had made 31 when he edged a catch to Cook at first slip.
Haddin, who ended the day on 78 not out, and Johnson then added some precious runs but, soon after the new ball had been taken, Broad took his fifth wicket when he bowled Johnson for 64.
Just before the close Anderson got Peter Siddle (7) to edge one to Cook, to leave Australia reeling at the end of the first day's play.
