Tottenham's season is going from bad to worse after Andros Townsend injured his hamstring during Wednesday's Capital One Cup last-eight defeat to West Ham.
The 22-year-old winger seems certain to miss Spurs' hectic festive programme after limping off the pitch in the 73rd minute of the 2-1 defeat.
When asked if Townsend would be out for a considerable time, caretaker manager Tim Sherwood replied: "It looks like it. It looks like he pulled up with a hamstring."
Spurs parted company with Andre Villas-Boas in the wake of Sunday's 5-0 home drubbing by Liverpool, and their quarter-final defeat to Sam Allardyce's side was another hammer blow to a team struggling for confidence.
Sherwood believes he could be the man to revitalise the side, although he admits he does not know if he will be in charge for Sunday's match against Southampton, which Spurs can be backed at14/1to win 2-0.
"The immediate future is up in the air, that's as much as I know," Sherwood said. "I'm up for a challenge. I always have been. I'm very opinionated.
"I know a certain way I need to play. I think I can manage men and deal with them and be honest with them. I think the chairman and the football club need to make the correct decision and find the manager who's best compatible to take this football club forward.
"I've got to be in the frame, but it's not my decision, unfortunately."
