Michael Carrick has handed Manchester United an injury scare ahead of the Manchester derby clash with rivals City on Tuesday night.
The midfielder picked up a late knock in the 2-0 weekend victory over West Ham United, having coped ably in a central defensive role for the rested Rio Ferdinand.
Carrick has a dead leg and will be assessed on Monday as United boss David Moyes plots to provide the Old Trafford faithful with some much-needed bragging rights.
Should Carrick fail to recover in time, the Red Devils could again turn to the experience of Ryan Giggs, who shone last week in the Champions League victory over Olympiacos.
United skipper Nemanja Vidic is again absent through suspension after his recent red card against Liverpool.
Moyes is also considering playing striker Danny Welbeck in a wider role to afford further protection to left-back Patrice Evra.
Moyes insists: "Derbies mean a lot. You get three points for winning any game, but there is added importance if you win the big matches.
"We go in after a better showing, if we play as well as we did at West Ham then we will make opportunities, we'll make chances.
"If we play with the same heart we showed against Olympiacos, then we'll be very hard to play against and have a big spirit in the game."
