Cameroon are determined to banish the bitter memories of four years ago by impressing in Brazil, starting against Mexico on Friday.
The Indomitable Lions lost three games out of three at the World Cup finals in South Africa amid tensions within the camp and the 1990 quarter-finalists are eager to put things right in Brazil.
Midfielder Stephane Mbia admitted: "Four years ago we were catastrophic.
"The mood in the camp wasn't good, there were a lot of problems, but this time that's not the case. We'll be making our mark on this tournament."
Cameroon and Mexico are joined in Group A by hosts Brazil and Croatia and Jean Makoun, who is still recovering from an ankle problem, is aware that his side's opening fixture is a crucial one if they want to progress to the knockout stages.
He told reporters: "Much will depend on the first game against Mexico, it's almost a game of six points.
"Our ambition is to pass the first round, which only happened once to Cameroon in the World Cup."
Lions coach Volker Finke has major doubts over Bordeaux midfielder Landry N'Guemo and winger Edgar Salli for the meeting with Mexico, who are set to leave Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez on the bench.
Hernandez has failed to find the net in his last nine international outings and he is likely to have to start on the sidelines, with Oribe Peralta the man in form, having scored eight goals in his last six competitive appearances.
