Manchester United head coach Louis van Gaal believes that his side can take some useful momentum into the new season after winning the International Champions Cup.
The Red Devils saw off Premier League rivals Liverpool 3-1 in the final and, while Van Gaal was wary of reading too much into the result, he was still pleased with the outcome.
He told reporters: "This will give us momentum, for sure. It's always better to win.
"First we beat Roma, then we beat Inter Milan with penalties, but we were much better, then we beat (Real) Madrid and then we had a test against a Premier League team."
Meanwhile, striker Wayne Rooney, who is widely expected to be named as United's new captain, hailed the progress made in the last couple of weeks, with Van Gaal asking his players to adapt to a fresh 3-5-2 system.
Rooney added: "It's been a good few weeks, we've got a new manager who wants us to play a different style of football.
"We've had to adapt. We've had some good results against top opposition, so we can be pleased.
"I think the system suits the team. The manager came in and had a look at the players we've got - he's done what he thinks is best suited for our team."
