Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has backed summer signing Cesc Fabregas to fill the void left by Frank Lampard's departure.
Lampard left the club at the end of last season when his contract expires to link up with New York City FC, although he has joined Premier League rivals Manchester City on loan until January before the start of the MLS season.
Former Arsenal midfielder Fabregas moved to Chelsea from Catalan giants Barcelona during the summer and has impressed in pre-season, with the 27-year-old grabbing a goal in the 2-1 win over Ferencvaros in Budapest on Sunday.
Mourinho is confident the Spain international will have a key role to play at Stamford Bridge next season and believes Fabregas will flourish in the middle of the park for the Blues.
"Frank is the history of the club, history nobody can forget," Mourinho told the club's official website.
"Fabregas is the future; history is history but the future is more important at the moment.
"My opinion, and the opinion of my players, is that Fabregas is the right player to occupy that central position in midfield."
Striker Didier Drogba sustained an ankle knock in Hungary on Sunday but it remains to be seen as to whether or not that will see him miss Chelsea?s season opener at Burnley next Monday.
