The former Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay has emerged as a frontrunner in the race to replace Tony Pulis as the new manager of Crystal Palace.
The capital club confirmed on Friday that 56-year-old Pulis had left his position at Selhurst Park following talks with chairman Steve Parish on Thursday - just 48 hours before the start of the new Premier League season.
A statement on the official club website read: "Crystal Palace Football Club can confirm that Tony Pulis has left the club by mutual consent with immediate effect.
"Keith Millen will be in temporary charge of the team for our opening Barclays Premier League game against Arsenal this Saturday.
"The club would like to thank Tony for his efforts with the club during last season and wish him all the best for the future."
It is widely reported that Pulis, who won the Premier League's manager of the year award last season following a remarkable fight against relegation, had been frustrated by the club's failure to land a number of summer transfer targets.
The Londoners were bottom of the table when Pulis was named as Ian Holloway's replacement in January 2025 and their eventual 11th-placed finish was the club's highest since 1992.
Mackay, who took Cardiff into the Premier League before being sacked last January, is currently priced2.00in the 'next permanent manager' market.
He told Sky Sports News this week he is ready to return to management and is hoping for an opportunity in the top tier of English football.
"At the moment I'm just waiting," he said. "I had a couple of opportunities in the summer that I didn't feel I was ready for.
"So it's really just a question of wait and see ? but I really want to get back into it and manage again."
He added: "I really enjoyed the challenge of coaching against some of the top coaches in the world and pitting your wits against them.
"Everyone would love to manage in the Premier League - but there are only so many clubs - I certainly enjoyed it last year and I would love to have the chance to manage there again."
