Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers does not think Daniel Sturridge will be able to return to action for another three weeks.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City striker has not played since January, missing the Reds' last 11 matches because of a thigh strain and then a calf injury.

Sturridge will definitely miss Saturday's Premier League clash at Newcastle United, a game Liverpool can be backed at17/2to win 1-0, and is unlikely to be able to play in the Champions League clash against Real Madridor next weekend's game against Chelsea,1/3to win the Premier League title outright.

Sturridge has not played since the victory at Tottenham in January and is expected to sit out England's matches against Slovenia and Scotland in January.

Rodgers said when asked if the 25-year-old would be able to play against Real Madrid or Chelsea: "No, I don't think so.

"We will just see where he's at with Liverpool over the next ten days and then we'll take it from there. But it's highly unlikely (he will go away with England)."

Sturridge's return to action may not come until the 23rd January trip to Crystal Palace,9/4to be relegated this season, with Rodgers adding: "I can only concentrate on his injury now and what my medical team here, who are fantastic, are telling me.

"He is just in the middle of recovering and we will see the length of time it takes. All we know is that he had a calf strain on the back of his last injury, and he is working to recover from that."

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen are in the Reds squad for the trip to Tyneside after being rested for the midweek Capital One Cup tie against Swansea City. Jose Enrique (knee), Mamadou Sakho (thigh), Suso (groin) and Jon Flanagan (knee) remain sidelined.
