Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini admits he can not understand why his side continue to struggle in the Champions League after losing at home to CSKA Moscow.

The Premier League champions are on the verge of being eliminated from Europe after being beaten 2-1 at home by CSKA Moscow, a result which leaves Pellegrini's men bottom of Group E.

City are4/1to qualify for the last-16 of the Champions League having failed to win any of their first four matches in the group stages, collecting just two points thus far.

The Citizens must now win their remaining two games, at home to Bayern Munich and away to Roma, to have any chance of reaching the knockout stages and that looks to be a tall order based on their form thus far.

Pellegrini could only watch on as a brace from Seydou Doumbia condemned his side to a third defeat in four matches in all competitions, with red cards for Yaya Toure and Fernandinho in the second half compounding the misery for the Chilean.

The former Real Madrid boss was lost for words when asked why City found the Champions League so difficult but he admitted his players were currently suffering from a crisis of confidence.

"It's very difficult to understand why we played so badly,? Pellegrini told Sky Sports.

"From the beginning we were so nervous. We lost so many passes and we gave them the two goals. Really, we didn't play.

?It?s difficult to know why you have so low a performance. In the way we tried to play we have not changed anything we did in any other games. I realise it?s a very difficult and strange moment to understand why it happened.

"I don't think it's just this competition. I think in the last two weeks we are not playing bad, but we are not playing the way we normally do.

?I don?t understand why, but we must find the reason to arrange the solution."

City will look to bounce back at the weekend when they travel to Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League.
