Liverpool club captain Steven Gerrard held his hands up after being red-cardedseconds aftercoming on as a substitute in the 2-1 Anfield loss to Manchester United.

The 34-year-old former England midfielder was introduced as a half-time replacement with his side trailing 1-0 to their Premier League top-four rivals, but was heading off the field just 38 seconds later after being shown a straight red card for a stamp on Ander Herrera.

And Gerrard pulled no punched when fronting up to the cameras at the end of the game, with United having taken a giant step towards securing a return to the Champions League next season.

He told Sky Sports: "I need to accept it, the decision was right. I've let down my team-mates and the supporters. I take full responsibility.

"I've been in the game long enough when you do something like that. I take full responsibility. I don't know what caused it, probably just a reaction to the initial tackle.

"I shouldn't say more about it really, I've just come out here to apologise to the dressing room and supporters."

Liverpool's last remaining hope of silverware is the FA Cup, where the Reds face a sixth round replay against Blackburn Rovers.

Meanwhile, United head coach Louis van Gaal was delighted with the result at Anfield, which lifted his side five points clear of the Merseysiders in the race for the all-important fourth place in the league.

The Dutchman said: "It's an amazing result for the fans, because we've beaten Liverpool three times this season. We now have a gap from positions five, six and seven which is very important."
