The Philadelphia Phillies' five-match winning streak was ended in emphatic fashion on Monday as they were shut out in a 4-0 defeat at the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Phillies went into the match with the best record in MLB and fresh from a four-game series sweep on the road to the San Diego Padres, but two early errors by Cliff Lee proved costly as he allowed home runs to Chris Young and Gerardo Parra.

Elsewhere, the Florida Marlins kept the pressure on the Phillies, although they left it late to triumph 5-4 over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Miami.

They were on course for a defeat when two ninth-inning fielding errors allowed the Marlins to score twice off Jonathan Broxton.

The Colorado Rockies went further ahead in the West with a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field as Cubs pitcher Starlin Castro committed three second-inning errors which allowed the visitors back into the game. The Rockies' win improved their regular-season record to 15-7.

The San Diego Padres responded to their home humbling by the Phillies by edging a 13-inning epic against the Atlanta Braves, whose own run of three straight wins was brought to an end.

The teams were locked together at 3-3 at the end of nine innings before Ryan Ludwick hit a walk-off homer to left centre field, his third home run of the season to date.

The Pittsburgh Pirates secured a 4-2 home triumph over the Washington Nationals and the Cincinnati Reds won 9-5 at the Milwaukee Brewers in the opening match of their three-game series, hitting six runs in the third inning of the match.

In the American League, the Chicago White Sox upset the form book at Yankee Stadium as they ended a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 triumph over the New York Yankees to stop the hosts' own winning run at three. Phil Humber looked set to record a no-hitter for the White Sox until Alex Rodriguez's single in the seventh.

The Los Angeles Angels snapped a four-game losing streak to beat the Oakland Athletics 5-0 as Jered Weaver struck out 10 and made it six wins and no defeats in matches he has started this season.

West leaders the Texas Rangers failed to claim a fourth win in a row as they lost 6-4 to the Toronto Blue Jays in Arlington as Corey Patterson, Jose Bautista and Juan Rivera all recorded home runs in the fifth inning.
