Manchester City duo David Silva and Yaya Toure are doubts for Sunday's derby against Manchester United after picking up injuries against Newcastle United.
City boss Manuel Pellegrini was forced to bring Samir Nasri on in the opening stages of Wednesday's Capital One Cup defeat to Alan Pardew's side when Silva sustained a knee injury, while Yaya Toure suffered a groin problem later in the game.
Pellegrini had named a strong side for the match but his plan backfired as City produced a lack-lustre display as they crashed out of a competition they won last season.
City drew 2-2 at CSKA Moscow in the Champions League before losing 2-1 at West Ham United, and are enduring a poor spell of form, to Pellegrini's consternation.
"We are not playing well," the Chilean admitted. "We are in a difficult moment with a lack of trust. We are conceding two easy goals and we are not scoring the chances we had.
"There is a lack of confidence that we must sort out as soon as possible. We will see which is the best way to recover that confidence. It is not normal to see this team playing this way.
"We will see with the doctor. David Silva has a problem in his knee. I don't know how serious it is. Yaya was a little bit tired with his groin.
"I am worried about why we are not playing the way we normally play. That is my only concern. This year we couldn't continue in the four competitions. That happened to a lot of teams last year. With one competition less, we concentrate more on the others."
