Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has told his players to focus on reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League, after failing to do so last season.
The Citizens, who are11.00to win the trophy for the first time in their history, dropped into the Europa League last term and Mancini is keen to avoid a repeat, as he prepares his side to take on Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday evening.
The Italian said: "I think it was a good experience last year - we did a good group but it was not enough.
"I think it is important now that we go to the second stage. After February anything can happen, but now it is difficult to say what we can do.
"I am sure we will arrive to win this trophy in the future. I do not know when, but I am sure because we are working for this."
Meanwhile, Real coach Jose Mourinho has ruled out making wholesale changes after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Sevilla at the weekend, while also backing City to win the Champions League in the near future.
The former Chelsea boss said: "I don't know if it is this season or next season with Roberto, or with another person in the future, but normally in the direction the club is going, sooner or later they will win the big cup."
